Effective writing is extremely important in change management, but did you know there's more than one style you can use? In this blog post, I talk about the differences between technical and persuasive writing, and explain when to use each type.

Technical writing

The goal of technical writing is to explain complex technical concepts and processes to a reader in a way that they can easily understand and apply. Technical writing uses clear, concise and precise language, and often includes diagrams, tables, and other visual aids to help explain complex technical concepts. Technical writing is objective and factual, and does not aim to persuade or influence the reader's opinion or behaviour.

Persuasive writing

Persuasive writing, on the other hand, is focused on convincing the reader to take a particular action or adopt a certain point of view. Persuasive writing often relies on emotional appeals and persuasive language to influence a reader's decision. In terms of writing style, persuasive writing often uses emotive language, rhetorical questions, and vivid imagery to appeal to the reader's emotions and imagination.

Persuasive writing can also be a powerful tool in managing change by helping to effectively communicate the need for, and benefits of, the proposed change to stakeholders, and inspiring them to take action.

Which style should you use?

It's important to understand that there's a place for both technical and persuasive writing in change management. When choosing whether to use technical or persuasive writing, it's best to consider your goal.

  • If you're producing learning materials, guides or procedures that explain a complex concept, you may want to write in the technical style.

  • If you're producing broader communications that aim to influence a reader's decision or inspire action, you may choose the persuasive route.
