Essential elements of an employee newsletter

What are the essential elements of an employee newsletter?

When done right, an internal newsletter can broaden your communication reach, make employees feel proud to work for your company and create a positive working environment.

In an ideal world, any company with 100 or more employees would have a regular internal newsletter. And in that same world, employees would rush to their inboxes to open it.

But to achieve that level of engagement, you need to provide employees with what they want—and what they want is great content.

So, if you’re thinking about starting an employee newsletter, make sure you include these three essential elements:

  1. Company wins. Employees love to hear about company victories. So, go ahead and celebrate the acquisition of new clients and share any recognition from existing clients. If your company has won an award or public commendation, include that too. Company wins are something the entire business can feel proud of.

  2. Employee recognition. Regularly profiling your employees shows that you value them. Staff love to read about new employees, recently promoted employees, or employees celebrating long service anniversaries. Don’t forget to include employee award winners too, like top-performing salespeople, best customer service representatives or values champions. Many employees love seeing themselves featured. Just make sure you check they’re okay with the attention first.

  3. Strategic changes. When a company is going through major changes, the official message needs to be communicated to everyone in the business. An employee newsletter is an effective channel to share such updates. However, be sure to make any verbal announcements first. Nothing’s worse than letting employees hear difficult news for the first time in a newsletter.

Once you’ve got these three areas covered, you can start incorporating other types of content into your newsletter too. Internal job advertisements, training opportunities, events, media coverage, competitor news, how-to guides, advice columns, professional lists and recommendations, resources and inspirational quotes are all great ways to boost employee engagement.
